Revived shades
20 additional gradations
The high absorption capacity of light beams gives the dry pastel
the most intense contrasts of all the pictorial methods.
In bright light the light parts are intensely clear.
Therefore, we have developed the range of chromatic values with
a wider, richer range of light shades. You will be able to use
even more subtle nuances whatever the subject chosen and your
way of working.
Creators' word
From its conception in 1780 to the present day,
Pastels Girault’s color chart has had 526 shades
declined in 4 cards: "portrait", "landscape",
"flowers and fruits" and "broken tones, background tones".
But for over 50 years, “only” 300 have been available!
The flagship project, which has been close to our
heart since we bought the company, is to recreate
the entire range of shades.
So we are taking advantage of this wonderful
anniversary to realize a part of this dream.
It took almost 1 year of work to revive these shades,
dormant for over half of century.
The principal task was the immense mathematical
process of calculating each shade, and we would
like to thank our uncle, Christian Petit, for his
invaluable help.

Hand-made in France
It's with patience, precision, and fineness that Stephane repeats the 6 key steps of the traditional workmanship on the entirety of our range. These last 20 gradations received the same care and attention, with the additional emotions of reviving a piece of history. In the house of Pastels Girault, it's through history that we write the future.

The wooden box
Alongside the manufacturing, we though about the
creation of a new limited-edition case to show
off the first 20 shades of this new chapter in
our great history on the occasion of our 240th
anniversary.
It’s always important for us to collaborate with
local artisans as much as with local material.
Therefore, this wooden box is produced in France
from the ash tree that we find in our local region,
and it is created by a cabinetmaker who lives in
our local village of Montignac-Lascaux.

« To exist, we must surround ourselves with persistant realities. »
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
After 240 years, Pastels Girault is one of these realities,
thanks to the rigorous conservation of our traditions
